It was supposed to be the complete opposite. But years into this digital revolution, the music industry seems to resemble a third world country. I’m talking about extreme gaps between the rich and poor, a depressingly large group in poverty, endemic corruption, extended decline, and the presence of pervasive, religious ideas that have little connection to reality. This industry has become so totally bi-polar, I’m not even sure where to begin. Well, how about the charts - any chart.

Music Business Rules
How do you get ahead in the music industry? Hard work and creativity count for a lot, of course, but unfortunately, they don't do the trick alone. In a business where personal connections matter, the impression you make on the people you meet can make a big difference. Come off as a cocky know-it-all, and no one will want to work with you. Show up late for the meeting, and give the impression that you're not professional. Be afraid to speak up and miss out on a great opportunity.

Origins Hip Hop
The roots of hip hop are found in African-American music and ultimately African music. The griots of West Africa are a group of traveling singers and poets who are part of an oral tradition dating back hundreds of years. Their vocal style is similar to that of rappers. In caribbean culture, griots are a major part ofcalypso music. [7] The African-American traditions of signifyin', the dozens, and jazz poetry are all descended from the griots. In addition, musical 'comedy' acts such as Rudy Ray Moore and Blowfly are considered by some to be the forefathers of rap. Alike dub music, hip hop as a DJing form started with no vocals and was purely of an electronic nature. However, the term 'hip hop' came later as it was a term invented during the days of written vocal hip hop music (rap). The relation of 'hip hop' to 'rap' is often argued.
Hip hop music - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Hip hop music is an American musical genre that developed as part of hip hop culture, and is defined by four key stylistic elements: rapping, DJing/scratching, sampling (or synthesis), and beatboxing. Hip hop began in the South Bronx of New York City in the 1970s. The term rap is often used synonymously with hip hop, but hip hop also denotes the practices of an entire subculture.[1]
Rapping, also referred to as MCing or emceeing, is a vocal style in which the artist speaks lyrically, in rhyme and verse, generally to an instrumental or synthesized beat. Beats, almost always in 4/4 time signature, can be created by sampling and/or sequencing portions of other songs by a producer.[2] They also incorporate synthesizers, drum machines, and live bands. Rappers may write, memorize, or improvise their lyrics and perform their works a cappella or to a beat."

At a glimpse: Music from the decades | The Jakarta Post
After two successful years, Djakarta Artmosphere’s performances are now available on DVD. The DVD captures just how good Indonesian music can be.
The idea of putting musical acts from two different generations on one stage is brilliant.
Did you ever imagine Navicula, a group of grunge gentlemen from Bali, playing back to back with God Bless, the legendary rock band, who seem like they could be Navicula’s grandfathers?
Or, even Sylvia Saartje’s long-missed act, which made Gugun and the Blues Shelter even better performing as her backup band?
Well, for those who missed last year’s Djakarta Artmosphere, those performances are available on DVD.
Ari Lasso: ‘I’m just a lucky man’ | The Jakarta Post
Ari Bernardus Lasso, better known as Ari Lasso, has had his fair share of ups and downs in his 18-year career as a pop musician and singer.
He first set up the band Outsider when he was still in high school in Surabaya with Wawan Juniarso (drummer) and Piyu (guitarist), then later joined Dewa 19 before going solo up to now.
“What I can conclude from my tough journey through life is that I’m a lucky man,” Ari summed up recently.

The 38 year old has a few reasons to say so: He battled a drug addiction for years, which finally led to his discharge from Dewa, went bankrupt, and almost slid into obscurity.
To overcome his drug addiction, he went through rehab. When asked if he had any regrets, the economics graduate from Airlangga University, Surabaya, said: “I even feel grateful I broke down and was kicked out of Dewa. God had a special plan behind my failure.”
When he realized he was no longer part of Dewa and thus had to struggle for survival, he strove to resolve his issues virtually in solitude. “I had no close ties with, for instance, a priest or figure that could give me some advice. I was all by myself, even estranged. So, the fact that I am here now is a miracle,” he added.
Jazzing it up in Borneo | The Jakarta Post

Different manifestations of jazz music were heard at the recently held Borneo Jazz Festival 2011 in Miri, Sarawak, to the delight of fans comprising a good mix of locals, expatriates and tourists.
Formerly known as the Miri International Jazz Festival, the event’s moniker has only been changed to Borneo Jazz Festival recently, to “highlight its vibrant qualities and prominence with other international festivals, as well as to present Borneo as a top destination among tourists”, said the festival organizer, Sarawak Tourism Board.
Having attracted a smaller turnout of over 6,000, as compared to over 8,000 last year, the four-day event (May 12-15) had proceeded with much aplomb.
Rihanna, Britney kick off Billboard Awards
After five years of dormancy, the Billboard Music Awards were revived Sunday with a major dose of star power.
Rihanna got the show off to a steamy start, wearing a skimpy leather outfit for her hit song "S&M," and was joined at the end of the number by Britney Spears, who appears on a remix on the track.
Taylor Swift won the evening's first award, as top album artist, behind the multimillion sales for "Speak Now."
"The impact of an album is all determined by the fans," she told the audience. "You've just given me another reason to be completely in love with you."
This year marks the Billboard Awards' rebirth. The Billboard Awards had been a staple since 1989, but gave out what appeared to be its last award in 2006. This year, the show was brought back.
Pitbull has it all as song tops UK singles chart
U.S. rapper Pitbull's song "Give Me Everything" has topped the British singles charts, the Official Charts Company said on Sunday.
The track -- the result of Pitbull's collaboration with U.S. singers Ne-Yo and Nayer and Dutch producer Afrojack -- rose from last week's fourth position and pushed "The Lazy Song" by Bruno Mars down to the second place.
Lady Gaga scored four singles in the top 40 list. Her lowest-ranked hit -- "Born This Way" from the much-hyped eponymous album due out on Monday -- came in at number 16.
New to the ranking were "Save The World" by Swedish House Mafia, at number 11, and "Hair" by Lady Gaga, at number 13.
In the albums chart, English pop singer Adele held on to the top spot with "21" for the fifth week in a row. Earlier this year, the recording topped the chart for 11 consecutive weeks before its reign was briefly broken in April.
New entrant "Director's Cut" by Kate Bush became the second-most popular album of the week.

May 16-22: Justin Bieber Sparks Online Frenzy For Indie Artist, Makes Surprise Visit At Concert

Justin Bieber is a well-known fan of pop superstars Michael Jackson, Usher, and Justin Timberlake. But you'd be incorrect if you assumed the 17-year-old known for his bubblegum chart-topping songs was only interested in mainstream music.
Thursday night, Justin surprised one of his favorite artists, lesser-known indie singer-songwriter Ernie Halter by showing up to Ernie's concert and joining him on stage. The two singers, who had previously never met, performed together Ernie's song "Come Home To Me."
The Rock Ridge Music recording artist was completely blindsided that Justin and Selena Gomez showed up to his concert at the La Cave restaurant in Orange Country, California. "I looked over to my left and saw him sitting there and my jaw dropped," Ernie told Yahoo! Music about Justin, who had just landed in Los Angeles, fresh off of an 11-hour flight from Tokyo.
The Top 10 'American Idol' Performances Of Season 10 - Reality Rocks
Season 10's "American Idol" finale is this week, and while finalists Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina both had their great moments this year (Scotty's best performances, in my opinion, were "You've Got A Friend" and "Gone," and Lauren's were "Flat On The Floor" and "Trouble"), ironically, I think the best performances of the season were by contestants who've already been voted off. "American Idol" often works out that way, sadly.
It's too bad, but the good news is, all of the top 13 will be on the "Idol" stage for the finale next Wednesday, and hopefully they'll give performances as good as these:
Beyonce Enlisted Embassy To Help Find Breakout Star Dancers In “Run The World (Girls)” Video - Hip-Hop Media Training
Beyoncé's "Run The World (Girls)" video has been streamed more than 13 million times since its release Wednesday night. A major part of the appeal can be attributed to the wicked choreography in the opening dance sequence.
Beyoncé's movements are in perfect sync with the song's metronome-precise rapid-fire beat. The choreography is drill team styled. The footwork switches up every few seconds, incorporating truncated bouts of stomping, hopping, and skipping gestures.

wide-ranging group of Canadian performers headlined the closing ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, including a surprise appearance by Neil Young, as well as songs from the likes of Michael Buble and Avril Lavigne.
The performers had been kept as a closely guarded secret until the show, which followed the conclusion of the games, but some names, including Canadian rockers Nickelback, and hip-hop act k-os, had leaked out prior to the show at BC Place in Vancouver last night (Feb. 28).
